A Clean Well Lighted Place

You are sitting at a bar at about two in the morning. There is an old deaf man that wants more drinks. There are two waiters, a younger one and an older one. This is from a story called “A Clean Well Lighted Place”. The story “A Clean Well Lighted Place” has two characters that are waiters who have alot of symbolism.

“A Clean Well Lighted Place” has a character that is an old waiter and has a big part. The old waiter resembles a light place for nighttime people just like him. He cannot sleep at night he has to sleep in the day. He gets mad at the young waiter because he wants to stay with the old man and give him company. The old waiter is the light and shelter for people like the old deaf man. He is a very kind and caring man and he resembles a light place.

Even though the old waiter has a big part, the young waiter has a big part too. The young waiter is very selfish and just wants to go home and get a good night’s sleep. He wants the old man to get out and go home. When the old man stays to long, the young waiter tends to get a bad night's sleep. When the old man wants another drink the young waiter tells him no. The young waiter does not care about anything but him self. The young waiter even told the old man that he wished he had killed himself. On page 176 the youlg waiter says "you should have just killed yourself".

In conclusion, the old waiter and the young waiter in “A Clean Well Lighted Place” are very different even though they have big parts in the story. The characters are very different. The old waiter is a lot nicer than the young waiter because he is the light for the people that don’t like the dark.
